HOW TO GET PUBLISHED!

July 20, 2018

Written By: joann

We’ve worked hard to have our design projects published nationally and regionally many times over. To us, it’s a stamp of approval from the highest level of our peers – the editors of the magazines we covet. Our first national publication was a 4 page spread in Southern Lady Magazine. We were (and still are) so proud of that feature! Our next feature is coming up in August/September issue of Southern Cottage which is published by Engaged Media, Inc.

To be totally honest though, we’ve never received a single new client from being published, but it has certainly built our credibility in the eyes of those prospective clients that care about that kind of thing.

So consider this podcast what we call a “teaching episode” for our fellow designers and new designers as we share what we’ve learned along the way on HOW TO GET PUBLISHED.

Here is sneak peak on what we talk about on Podcast Episode #25.

DESIGN WITH AN EYE FOR PUBLICATION

We remember taking a coaching class from Arkansas designer Tobi Fairley and she said, “When I walk into a home of a new client, I’m designing with the end in mind, with how my design will look when it’s photographed and published.”   We didn’t quite understand that as new designers, but we do now.

This is the approach we now take as well. It helps us to focus on every wall and every corner to make sure that the design is balanced and “full”. When you look through a camera lens, you see flat and dull areas of a space right away. So if we design with this viewpoint in mind, we won’t miss anything.

LEAVE THE SPACE “FINISHED” – IN OTHER WORDS, DESIGN FULLY

A. We aim to leave a space fully designed so that our client has nothing left to worry about. Of course we leave picture frames to be filled and small details like that, but we work hard to incorporate many of the clients personal and important accessories, art and chatkes into the design from the beginning. When we stylize on install day, we include cozy throws, fresh soaps, laundered linens – you name it! This way, the client is thrilled and when we come back to photograph, we don’t have a ton to do.

INVEST IN QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY

A. This is our #1 piece of advice not only to have for your website but to have to offer editors.

i. Average costs

ii. Research photographers and pay for the best

iii. Scouting shots vs. providing professional photography to editors

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PHOTO SHOOT

A. Prepare your client – clean and tidy the space, no need to be home (this will take hours).

B. Fresh flowers the day before – make your own or order ahead – all one color is best

i. Kinds that looks best

ii. Containers that look best

Photo credit – Emily Followill Photography

C. Take photos on install day and look for “holes” or areas that need to be “full” for magazines

D. How to dress a kitchen

photo credit – Lauren Rubinstein Photography

E. It’s ok to remove furniture – look thru the lens with your photographer and offer your eye – participate in your shoot

REACH OUT TO EDITORS, MEET & GREET!

A. Don’t be shy! They are people too.

B. Get used to the names on the Masthead of each shelter magazine. Reach out on social media.

C. Post original work on social media especially Instagram. Editors are trolling!

D. Don’t be afraid to start locally – blogs, newspapers, etc.

E. Read Amy Flurry’s book “Recipe for Press”

We’ve been very lucky to have been published many times over.  Here are just a few:

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

Atlanta Magazine Home

Atlanta Journal Constitution

Better Homes and Gardens

Charleston Magazine

Cottages and Bungalows

HGTV Magazine

House of Turquoise Blog

Kitchen and Bath Makeovers

Marietta Daily Journal

Southern Style at Home

We always end the podcast with a “humorous” quote and an “inspirational” quote.  Here they are!!

Our podcast has just been approved on Spotify!  You can listen here or here!

All the best,

What color is the White House?

July 31, 2017

Written By: joann

We recently attended a Gather for Design event at Miko and Boone Home in Roswell, Georgia where we learned some interesting facts about the color white and product knowledge on Sherwin William paints.

The entire White House exterior (trim and body) is painted with 570 gallons of Whisper White.

The Hollywood Sign was restored to its full beauty and got a “face-lift” from Sherwin Williams and The Hollywood Sign Trust.  This was the most extensive refurbishment in nearly 35 years and was completed in time for the Sign to celebrate it’s 90th birthday in 2013.

To ensure the makeover endures the test of time, the existing coatings were removed from each of the letters, a time-intensive process completed almost entirely by hand.

  • The Hollywood Sign is 450 feet wide – each letter stands 45′ high and ranges between 31′ and 39′ wide
  • This was the Sign’s most extensive refurbishment since it was built in the late 70s
  • The Sign’s nine letters had all existing coatings removed before being primed and painted
  • The Sign’s color is Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White (SW7757)
  • The Sign was painted with 255 gallons of Emerald™ Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint in Satin
  • The Sign was primed with 105 gallons of Pro Industrial™ Pro-Cryl® Universal Acrylic Primer
  • The refurbishment took nine weeks to complete

Here are some favorite rooms in white:

Designer Brooke Davenport – Southern California Master Bedroom

Designer Louise Brooks – Glossy White Kitchen

Above images: Coastal Living – Photo by Mark Lohman, Stylist: Francoise O’Neill

What is the advantage to painting a white room?

White has an ability to reflect the maximum light in a room.  It is bright, fresh and clean.  Adding bold texture and pops of color is the secret to creating a stylish space.  There is a reason art gallery walls are white.  They ensure the artwork remains the focus.

I love nothing more than a brick fireplace painted white.  Check out Kelly’s personal family room:

Check out the before and after of another fireplace we designed for a client painting the brick white:

A fresh coat of white paint and a custom zinc mantel – what a transformation!

It’s no wonder that white is a staple for interior designers.  Our favorite – Sherwin Williams Westhighland White – SW7566

Have a great week!

Charleston Show House

February 6, 2017

Written By: joann

We are excited to announce that we have been asked to participate in the Charleston Symphony  Orchestra League Show House in partnership  with Traditional Home beginning  March 16th to April 15, 2017 Mondays through Saturdays 10am -4pm and Sundays 1-4pm.

This gorgeous circa 1840 house is a stunning Greek Revival structure just a few steps from the historic Charleston harbor.  It boasts magnificent decorative plaster ceilings, original moldings and fireplaces, gracious rooms and dramatic double piazzas.

The chair of this great event is Julianne Taylor, Founder and Creative Director of Taylor Burke Home which offers upholstered furniture, benches, tables, dining, fabrics and lighting.  She is also the author of Design Her, a celebration of female entrepreneurs shaping today’s home decor industry.  You can order a copy by clicking here.  It’s a great graduation gift for women or those yearning to start a new business!

We are thrilled to be designing the 2nd story laundry room.   This is a dream come true for us as we LOVE Charleston! Even though the space is small, we have some BIG plans!

We are amidst some serious talent –  Holly Hollingsworth Phillips, Meg Caswell Holladay, Michael Mitchell, Tyler Hill, Alexandre Fleuren, Bobbi Jo Engelby, Lauren Messina, Terry Stephenson, Terri Caban Baldwin, Jay Richard Valk Sandra Faulkenberry Ericksen GordonDunning, and Cathy McCullough Austin.

If you’ve considered visiting this amazing city, this Spring would be a great time to do it.  A fun girls weekend for sure.

Here are just some of my favorite things about Charleston:

Shopping on King Street – just to name a few – Apple Store, Urban Outfitters, J.Crew, Lululemon, Lilly Pulitzer, Soma Intimates, Hampden Clothing, George C. Birlant & Co. Antiques, Atelier Gallery, Louis Vuitton, Le Creuset and hundreds more.  On the second Sunday of every month, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, King Street is closed to vehicle traffic to celebrate southern Sunday afternoons by welcoming everyone to stroll, shop, dine and enjoy Charleston.

There are at least 12 art galleries on King Street alone.  One of my favorite artists, Erin Gregory, is represented by The Atelier Gallery at 153 King Street.

Award winning dining – my latest favorite 167 Raw for the best seafood ever!

Another amazing restaurant called Husk at 76 Queen Street.  Check out the “haint blue” porch ceiling.  What is that you ask?

Lori Sawaya, a color strateiest, says many Southerners suggest that blue porch ceilings originated out of the fear of haints. Southerners, especially in the area of South Carolina, have a name for the ceiling paint used on porches – the soft blue-green is referred to as “Haint Blue.”

“Haints are restless spirits of the dead who, for whatever reason, have not moved on from their physical world,” says Sawaya.

Haint blue, which can also be found on door and window frames as well as porch ceilings, is intended to protect the homeowner from being “taken” or influenced by haints. It is said to protect the house and the occupants of the house from evil.

Another great reason to visit Charleston?   The beaches and resorts:

Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island!!

Come see why Charleston has been voted the No.1 City in the World and No. 1 City in the U.S and Canada in the Travel and Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards!

Mark your calendars for the  Charleston Symphony  Orchestra League Show House beginning  March 16th to April 15, 2017 Mondays through Saturdays 10am -4pm and Sundays 1-4pm.

Have a great week!

Coastal Living Hamptons Showhouse 2016

July 26, 2016

Written By: kelly

For 48 years, I have spent my summers in the Hamptons. High hedges hiding graceful mansions, cold ocean waters, flat, wide streets for biking, quaint cafes, farm stands, fresh pies and picking crabs are just a few of my fond memories. One of my priorities this trip was to attend the Coastal Living Showhouse in Sag Harbor, just 45 minutes from my parents home in Quogue.

IMG_2226

This incredible home is brand new and was built by Touch of Grey, Inc and designed entirely by the talented Meg Braff.  The architect is Fred Throo and the landscape architect is Mahoney Associates. The show home benefited the Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery.

The house was bright, fresh, coastal and happy.  I loved every square inch of it.

IMG_2185

IMG_2186

Meg tastefully used an abundance of wallpaper which I was thrilled to see because I LOVE wallpaper. It added movement, texture and bright colors all over.

IMG_2332

IMG_2208

I have to admit though, that more than the wallpaper, I loved the use of bright colored tiles in all of the bathrooms.  So brave and so beautiful!

IMG_2192

It was so hot in Sag Harbor last week.  All I wanted to do was jump in the crystal blue pool and then lounge in an airy cabana complete with full kitchen and bath.

IMG_2229

IMG_2228

It was nice to see a lot  of the same manufacturers that we use regularly with our clients such as Lee Industries, Circa Lighting, Wendover Art, Sunbrella Fabrics, Delta Faucets, Thibaut, Peacock Alley, Dash & Albert and more. We must be doing something right!

The terrace level of the home was the FUN level – complete with fitness room, theatre room, office and pool/lounge room.

IMG_2209

IMG_2211

I loved the house because it was spacious but manageable. It had a natural flow and was perfect for big families or lots of guests. Fully furnished the house is for sale for $5.2 million. Interested?

The house is open Thursdays – Sundays until September 4th.

Enjoy!

Another great event sponsored by the High Point Market Authority is the Style Spotters Program.  What exactly is a style spotter? Style spotters are trend setters that see ahead of the curve in home fashion trends.  They will navigate the show and capture images of their favorite products.  They will then pin those photos to Pinterest boards and will list the exhibitor’s name and showroom number.  They present the exhibitor with a sign that highlights the Style Spotter’s name with a QR code and URL for the Pinterest board.

Our 2015 Style Spotters Look Forward to Spring Market

Home fashion experts offer their first take on the styles of spring, 2015

As we head into the waning weeks of winter, our attention turns to the arrival of spring. For many of us, the new season means a welcome turn toward warmer weather, and for all of us, spring brings new fashions, styles, and trends – and they’ll all be waiting for us at Spring Market. To get in the right frame of mind for the event of the new season, we asked our 2015 Style Spotters to tell us what they’ll be looking for when they arrive in High Point on April 18. So sit back, relax, forget the lower temps and shorter days – let’s start thinking spring!

Arianne Bellizaire

inspiredtostyle.com@inspiredarianne

Arianne Bellizaire, Inspired to Style

As an interior decorator and blogger (but more importantly a lover of good design), I love spaces with bright, bold colors and interesting pattern combinations. I’m expecting to see lots of both at this Market, but I’ve noticed a growing trend toward more subtle spaces done in black, white and gold color palettes. It’ll be interesting to see how this trend is represented at Market.

To me, High Point Market is a bit like Disney World! There’s so much to see and never enough time, so I’ve learned that having a plan for who and what you want to see is the best way to maximize your time.

“Having a plan … is the best way to maximize your time.”
– Arianne Bellizaire, Inspired to Style

Who’s on my “must-see” list this Spring? Well, I’m looking forward to visiting Emporium Home, Bungalow 5 and Noir Trading Inc. to see their trend-forward accessories and case goods. I’ll drop into Vanguard Furniture Co. Inc., Hickory Chair and Wesley Hall Inc. to see their beautifully designed upholstery pieces. I’ll head into CR Laine Furniture to get a sneak peek at Tobi Fairley’s newly unveiled upholstery collection, and Thibaut Fine Furniture to see how they’ve incorporated gorgeous fabrics and wall-covering options into their showroom vignettes. Currey & Company Inc. and Visual Comfort & Co. can always be counted on for over-the-top lighting elements, and finally, I’ll visit the Antique & Design Center at Market Square to see an impressive array of one-of-a-kind antiques.

Kati Curtiskaticurtisdesign.com@designerkati

Kati Curtis, Kati Curtis Design

I’m inspired by my travels, and those inspirations are reflected in my design work. While hiking in Mexico, I saw beautiful, repetitive patterns in the Mayan ruins. In India, the vibrant colors captivated me; in Indonesia, the craftsmanship that went into the hand-carved exotic woods spoke to me, and in Israel, the gold leaf and precious stone inlays compelled me to seek more. So at Market, I’ll be excited to see how designers and manufacturers are incorporating these influences in products today.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more navy and green.”
– Kati Curtis, Kati Curtis Design

Global and tribal elements, as they appear in motifs, colors and patterns, are of real interest to me. Seeing what’s new – particularly inspired by the American Southwest, Mexico, South America, Southeast Asia and India – is something I’m really looking forward to at Spring High Point Market.

What else is important to me? Colors that are deep, rich and clean, but also influenced by today’s fashion. So in 2015 I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more navy and green (favorites of mine), from what I have in my wardrobe to what I use in my designs.

I’m always on the hunt for new products … beautiful pieces with extra storage are an ongoing obsession. Inlaid pieces are exciting to me right now, and that probably has a lot to do with India, which, in so many ways, always seems to hold my attention.

Details are of particular importance: a leather strap on the back of a chair, a turned leg – these elements of craftsmanship are interesting to me, so I’ll be looking to find gorgeous handmade intricacies in the smallest details, as well as the largest.

Beth Dotolopulpdesignstudios.com@pulpdesigns

Beth Dotolo, RID, ASID, NCIDQ, Pulp Design Studios

High Point Market has become an incredibly important event for my interior design firm, Pulp Design Studios. When my partner, Carolina Gentry, and I began attending years ago we quickly realized that Market was a one-stop-shop that provided us with not only unlimited design inspiration and a first look at new trends, but also unparalleled networking opportunities and vendor exposure, which we’ve been able to utilize to grow our business. This year, I’m incredibly honored to be participating in a larger capacity as a Style Spotter.

“Perhaps the thing I look forward to most is being able to have a tangible experience of these amazing new products and trends.”
– Beth Dotolo, Pulp Design Studios

For Spring Market, I am looking forward to seeing even more amazing new products and capturing the latest home fashion trends. I am excited to see the interior industry’s take on the highly debated 2015 color of the year, Marsala, with hopefully more interior friendly shades in blush and rose. I expect copper, brass, and gold to still be strong. I’m predicting a global product influence, with a modern take. And, I am also looking to see fearless and large scale patterns that will make an impact, yet still be livable.

Perhaps the thing I look forward to most is being able to have a tangible experience of these amazing new products and trends. Come April, you’ll find me sitting in and running my hands over just about everything.

When it comes to Style Spotting this Spring, I’ll be looking for products that have qualities that align with the values my partner and I have embodied for Pulp Design Studios’ design and business approach: Purpose, Quality, Individuality, Creativity, Humor, and Adaptability. Wrap all those qualities into a stylish product, and consider it “Spotted!”

Lori GilderLoriGilder.com@lorigilder

Lori Gilder, Interior Makeovers Inc.

It truly is a thrill being a part of the 2015 Style Spotters team. This will be my third trip to Market and while I’m looking forward to the treasure trove of sources I find in venues like Market Square and Interhall, this year I’m also excited to scour the outlying showrooms and Antiques and Design Center for those one of a kind finds!

“I’m hoping to see more mid century modern influences … with a twist.”
– Lori Gilder, Interior Makeovers Inc.

With a passion for designing kitchens and baths, I’ll be on the hunt for unique products and materials, current color and fabric trends, rare vintage finds, architectural design elements, innovative lighting and fabulous furnishings, all of which will speak to my kitchen obsessed clients. It’s all about finding those special gems that become the crowning jewel in the kitchen of their dreams.

I’m naturally drawn to crisp clean design elements and the architectural integrity of a space. I’m hoping to see more mid century modern influences … with a twist. I’m also a huge fan of mixing metals and while I adore the brass trend, I do expect to see more rose gold and copper details integrated into casegoods, seating and lighting.

With 12 million square feet of showroom and exhibit space, High Point Market is a driving force in the creative process. Staying ahead of industry trends and developing relationships with product designers and vendors helps us create those unique environments that our clients expect.

Patti Johnsonpattijohnsoninteriors.com@PJohnsonInt

Patti Johnson, IDS, DSID, Patti Johnson Interiors

In addition to the fantastic color and inspiring designs that designers get so excited to see at Spring Market, I will be hunting the unique customizable upholstery, custom case good pieces and one of a kind items that really make a home personal for my clients. Lead times are also very important to both my business and to my clients.

“I’m always ‘Style-spotting’ to find great new resources.”
– Patti Johnson, Patti Johnson Interiors

Designing from a standpoint of a “Well Designed Life,” to borrow a popular phrase, more and more people are now working from home and/or have very long commutes. Thus their homes must be a haven for well-being throughout while co-existing with integrated home offices. Sourcing creative solutions on that front, I also love to throw in a wild card or two while maintaining a core principle of Cohesive Design. This means that every furnishing, fixture, finish, lighting or object ultimately “makes sense” in the overall design of the space. My clients like quality and comfort, and I can easily achieve this by using some of my wonderful classic go-to brands such as American Leather, Bernhardt and John Strauss Furniture. Still, I’m always “Style-spotting” to find great new resources so that nothing is ever repeated or becomes stale in my designs.

Last but not least are the wonderful educational and social activities available to every attendee at High Point Market. I encourage everyone to find time to attend a session. Of course I love seeing all the fab friends I’ve made via social media while visiting the beautiful showrooms – and I’m really excited to be a 2015 Style Spotter!

Courtney Lakemonogramdecor.com@courtneyoutloud

Courtney Lake, Monogram Décor

What I am looking for as a High Point Market Style Spotter is innovation and creativity with a modern touch. My eye is always drawn to pieces that have a bit of “quirk” to them. An interesting application of veneer or a fun drawer detail are all signs that the manufacturer was not just thinking about practicality. Whether it’s the hinges on a case good or the stitching on the seams of a sofa, these are the type of things that get my blood pumping.

“Expect to find me digging for the hidden gems.”
– Courtney Lake, Monogram Décor

I want to see what the ladies of Taylor Burke have in store for Market. I met them at their first Market and was immediately impressed by their product and the agility to which it could be morphed to fit a client’s needs.

I will also be searching out what new things are coming from California-based company SkLO. I had the pleasure of working with them on a model home and was smitten with their innovative approach to glass. I love finding art and accessories that are not only beautiful but have a purpose.

So, this Market, expect to find me digging for the hidden gems that make me coo, clap and do a happy jig. And yes, I do dance when I get excited ….

Jonathan Legatejonathanlegate.com@jonathanlegate

Jonathan Legate, Jonathan Legate Interior Consultation

I love spring! It is a time of rebirth when everything is new and vibrant: it’s a breath of fresh air. Even the familiar has a sparkle – it has grown, evolved and become new again. Just like the season, Spring High Point Market is filled with the new and familiar shining in a fresh, bright light.

“Keeping a finger on the pulse of design is crucial.”
– Jonathan Legate, Jonathan Legate Interior Consultation

As a designer with a reputation for mixing the new with the familiar in both traditional and contemporary settings, keeping a finger on the pulse of design is crucial to my work. This year, personally and professionally, I am focusing on many things including:

Naturals / Organics
From the materials and processes used to manufacture items to pattern references in art and fabrics, items that reference and respect the earth they come from. Exotic marbles, driftwood, clay, semi precious stone and shell. Linen, cotton and wools, natural vegetable dyes, soothing colors. Sustainability.

Metallics / Luxury
From glass and brass to shimmering velvets and silks on luxurious upholstered furniture, reflective, lacquered finishes, semi precious and man made materials. Copper, bronze, bold brass, platinum, rose gold. Vibrant tones. Chic.

Tribal (this is really quite personal, inspired by a recent trip to South America)
From rugs to woven baskets and blankets to hand hammered bowls and found artifacts, inlaid tables and trays. Earthy tones with vibrant pops. Worldly.

Pure Classics
Art and artifacts from the 19th to mid 20th centuries. 50’s, 60’s, 70’s fabulous lighting and furniture, strong lines that give way to sensuous curves. Scandinavian design, simple details against the fabulously ornate. Sophisticated.

Leslie Hendrix Woodhadleycourt.com@hadley_court

Leslie Hendrix-Wood, Hadley Court

Gracious Living. Timeless Design. Family Traditions. Those have always been the guiding principles behind my life, my interior design work here in Midland, Texas, and the information I share with my blog’s readers on Hadley Court.

“I’ll .. be looking to spot … products … that represent the quality workmanship I value today.. which also have the style attributes I believe will represent tomorrow’s timeless designs.”
– Leslie Hendrix Wood, Hadley Court

As a 2015 Style Spotter, I’ll be looking at the beautiful new introductions from my go-to resources like Bernhardt Furniture, Jonathan Charles Furniture, Century Furniture and Gabby Decor. After that, I’ll also be looking to spot new products plus antique resources that represent the quality workmanship I value as an interior designer today, which also have the style attributes I believe will represent tomorrow’s timeless designs for America’s luxury furniture collectors and connoisseurs.

One other event we don’t want to miss is the Junior League of High Point Designer Showhouse.

1463911_847226605349380_3793562305204195845_n

The 2015 Showhouse, a circa-1912 Tudor Revival home, will feature both local and national designers and will celebrate the theme “From High Point to the World.” Each designer will draw inspiration from the history of the Terry property and the furniture-rich history of High Point. The home’s transformation will create a modern, livable space in a historic home.

It will run from Saturday April 18 – Sunday April 26, 2015 and Friday May 1 – Sunday May 3, 2015 from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm daily.

Read my friend Lisa Mende’s blog for a great story about the house!
