Why change your front door color?

December 7, 2017

Written By: joann

Once the holiday decorations come down, the exterior of your home can look sad and dreary.  A great way to add some personality and punch is to paint the front door.  It’s a great project that can be done in a day and adds some wow factor to your home!

Here are some of my favorites!

There is an emotion that is evoked when people view color.  Think about your home’s style and personality and be brave!!

A yellow door will bring energy, positivity and happiness!

Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray – 2062-20 – photo hector sanchez

Blue represents calmness and strength.

The color green is associated with money, ambition and growth.

Sherwin Williams Determined Orange SW6636 –  Better Homes and Gardens

Orange radiates warmth and wisdom.

Gray is a wonderful neutral that lets your light fixtures, flowers and architecture stand out.

Magnolia Home Blackboard – Source HGTV Fixer Upper

Black is considered a “classic” – you can never go wrong with this one!

Sherwin Williams Ravishing Coral SW6612 – check out this adorable house in Charleston here!

Another great way to get ideas is to drive around areas near your home!

You can always opt for a humorous door mat.  Check these out!

Or something sweet and normal for the holiday:

Wishing you the best!!

Charleston Show House

February 6, 2017

Written By: joann

We are excited to announce that we have been asked to participate in the Charleston Symphony  Orchestra League Show House in partnership  with Traditional Home beginning  March 16th to April 15, 2017 Mondays through Saturdays 10am -4pm and Sundays 1-4pm.

This gorgeous circa 1840 house is a stunning Greek Revival structure just a few steps from the historic Charleston harbor.  It boasts magnificent decorative plaster ceilings, original moldings and fireplaces, gracious rooms and dramatic double piazzas.

The chair of this great event is Julianne Taylor, Founder and Creative Director of Taylor Burke Home which offers upholstered furniture, benches, tables, dining, fabrics and lighting.  She is also the author of Design Her, a celebration of female entrepreneurs shaping today’s home decor industry.  You can order a copy by clicking here.  It’s a great graduation gift for women or those yearning to start a new business!

We are thrilled to be designing the 2nd story laundry room.   This is a dream come true for us as we LOVE Charleston! Even though the space is small, we have some BIG plans!

We are amidst some serious talent –  Holly Hollingsworth Phillips, Meg Caswell Holladay, Michael Mitchell, Tyler Hill, Alexandre Fleuren, Bobbi Jo Engelby, Lauren Messina, Terry Stephenson, Terri Caban Baldwin, Jay Richard Valk Sandra Faulkenberry Ericksen GordonDunning, and Cathy McCullough Austin.

If you’ve considered visiting this amazing city, this Spring would be a great time to do it.  A fun girls weekend for sure.

Here are just some of my favorite things about Charleston:

Shopping on King Street – just to name a few – Apple Store, Urban Outfitters, J.Crew, Lululemon, Lilly Pulitzer, Soma Intimates, Hampden Clothing, George C. Birlant & Co. Antiques, Atelier Gallery, Louis Vuitton, Le Creuset and hundreds more.  On the second Sunday of every month, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, King Street is closed to vehicle traffic to celebrate southern Sunday afternoons by welcoming everyone to stroll, shop, dine and enjoy Charleston.

There are at least 12 art galleries on King Street alone.  One of my favorite artists, Erin Gregory, is represented by The Atelier Gallery at 153 King Street.

Award winning dining – my latest favorite 167 Raw for the best seafood ever!

Another amazing restaurant called Husk at 76 Queen Street.  Check out the “haint blue” porch ceiling.  What is that you ask?

Lori Sawaya, a color strateiest, says many Southerners suggest that blue porch ceilings originated out of the fear of haints. Southerners, especially in the area of South Carolina, have a name for the ceiling paint used on porches – the soft blue-green is referred to as “Haint Blue.”

“Haints are restless spirits of the dead who, for whatever reason, have not moved on from their physical world,” says Sawaya.

Haint blue, which can also be found on door and window frames as well as porch ceilings, is intended to protect the homeowner from being “taken” or influenced by haints. It is said to protect the house and the occupants of the house from evil.

Another great reason to visit Charleston?   The beaches and resorts:

Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island!!

Come see why Charleston has been voted the No.1 City in the World and No. 1 City in the U.S and Canada in the Travel and Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards!

Mark your calendars for the  Charleston Symphony  Orchestra League Show House beginning  March 16th to April 15, 2017 Mondays through Saturdays 10am -4pm and Sundays 1-4pm.

Have a great week!

Vern Yip and Fabricut

March 1, 2015

Written By: joann

What a surprise to be invited to a private dinner at the Atlanta home of Vern Yip by Fabricut, one of our favorite fabric suppliers.

We were there with 20 other interior design bloggers who were attending the Design Bloggers Conference in Atlanta to celebrate the new fabric and trim collection.  We received the new fabrics and trims just a few weeks ago and have already incorporated this collection in about 4 projects!

Vern’s inspiration comes from his world travels and background in architecture.  We were shocked to find out that he double majored in Chemistry and Economics at the University of Virginia, was about to attend medical school and then changed his mind and went to Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and got a masters in management and architecture.

Vern and his partner Craig were extremely gracious hosts!

Vern Yip:Craig Koch

They spent a lot of time walking us through their home and it was heartwarming to see how personal it was.  As you walk in the front door, straight ahead is this beautiful picture of Vern’s mother.

Vern Yip - Mother Photograph

Behind this is a magnificent staircase…

As you go up the stairs you are greeted with this wall of framed family photographs.

Along with the many personal photos throughout the house, the vast collection of  art is exceptional.  This piece called The Raft of the Medusa from Pictures of Chocolate is by Vik Muniz, one of Vern’s favorites artists who does photographic representations of work using ordinary objects such as sugar, thread, chocolate syrup and garbage to create bold, deceiving imagery.

As we went from room to room, the fabrics and trims in the new collection are used throughout.  One of my favorites below is an asian, global/ethnic print shown in blue and is also available in black, grey, haze, orange and red.  It was in the children’s family room/playroom along with an adorable, actual photo of their 4 dogs.  Craig owns Wagalot, a service that includes doggie daycare, boarding, grooming, training, dog wash and special events.

Meeting their children was also a highlight of the evening.  They were waiting to greet all of us at the front door when we arrived.

I couldn’t help taking a selfie with each of them!

After our tour and the kids went to bed (they were so well behaved), we sat down for a decadent meal and interesting conversation.

Here are a few more of my favorites from the collection:

The tapes and trims are easy to work with and are so reasonably priced. The fabrics are whimsical, yet practical.

There really aren’t words to describe this experience and the hospitality we received.  Vern and Craig not only opened their home to us but their hearts as well.

What are FLOR Tiles?

December 1, 2014

Written By: joann

FLOR is an innovative system of carpet squares that you assemble to create custom rugs, runners or wall to wall designs of any shape or size.

Screen Shot 2014-11-16 at 12.31.48 PM

The beautiful thing about FLOR is that the squares connect securely together with FLORdots – no nails, padding or glue.  They can be easily replaced, allowing flexibility and portability along with beauty and remarkable performance.

The creative options are what I also love.  You can create solids, vintage looks, stripes, sisals, graphics, wool and even purchase area rugs created by FLOR.  There is a look for every room.

It is clearly a no-brainer when our clients tell us they would like something beautiful but are wary of expensive carpets because of kids, dogs, and everyday living.  That’s where FLOR is our lifesaver.  I can’t even count how many projects we have used it in.  Here are just a few:

The “lasting greatness” style in red was used at the United Methodist Children’s Home for Room Service Atlanta.  To read more about this project click HERE!

Image 15

We used a whimsical, color block for this commercial space.  It happens to be the “brand” colors for this client.

Lighthouse_2217

And here, a dining room of all places, where lots of spills could happen, we used a solid texture which worked wonderfully for a family with 2 young children.   The other advantage to FLOR is if a really “beyond the normal” mess occurs, we suggest purchasing a few “extra” tiles so they can be swapped out!

Image 6

Not only is FLOR attractive and functional, the company is very environmentally friendly.  They have a return and recycle program where you can send back your tiles once they have lived their useful life.  This is how it works:  You package up the squares, call FLOR and they will mail you a pre-paid UPS label based on the weight of your package.  The carpet portion is sent to be made into recycled nylon fibers and the backing is shredded into small pellets to create post consumer recycled GlasBac Re backing.

Not only do they care about the environment, they also participate in Carpet for a Cause where they involve themselves in multiple projects to help others.  For one week in November, they are donating one FLOR square for every order placed to donate FLOR rugs to more than 30 classrooms across the country with more donations in the works.

Do you have a favorite charity, organization or school you think could benefit from a FLOR rug donation?  Click for the Carpet for a Cause submission form to be considered!
