How To Design a Room from Scratch!

November 9, 2014

Written By: joann

Here is a completed room with a list below on how we designed this room from scratch.

Kandrac & Kole Blog

Photography by Emily Jenkins Followill

1.  Take detailed measurements and photos.

2.  Assess the clients needs, likes,  dislikes and evaluate how the room will function. This would be an “adult space” for conversation and entertaining.

3.  Find or create an inspiration piece.  We wanted to incorporate modern, original art and had this 60″ x 60″ poly resin canvas commissioned to include abstract navy, turquoise and chartreuse.

4.  Create a seating area.

Four wing chairs around a round marble cocktail table worked perfectly.

5.  Anchor the space and add softness.

6.  Add an etagere for cocktail supplies and decorative accessories (not seen in photo above).

7.  Create a “wow” factor with this amazing open geometric cube chandelier.

8.  Add a mirror to open up the space and create a beautiful reflection of the chandelier.

9.  Have a rendering of the room created for the client.

10.  Present the design to the client and look at the before photo:

11.  Wait for the client to say “yes, we’ll take it” – place orders and wait for a happy reveal in 6-8 weeks!

How to Bring your Interior Design Vision to Life!!

May 23, 2013

Written By: joann

Stoltzrendering

There is nothing like creating a design and seeing it come to life!  As a designer, I have a vision in my head and then hope after all of the selections are made that it becomes what I had hoped it would be!!  One person who makes this happen is Joan Borawski.  She is the talented lady that creates our renderings, by hand, to scale, the old fashioned way.  She is able to bring the texture, color and vision to paper and allows our clients to see “exactly” what their room will look like!!

The art above the fireplace will be a custom piece created by Jay Scott, an incredible Atlanta artist.  The little sky blue table is a gorgeous accent from Bungalow 5.

For some reason, this year, we have been designing several family rooms.  It’s rewarding to be able to create a space that people will gather in and make it beautiful, comfortable and functional.  Check these out:

Hermansonrendering

This client yearned for a space that was uncluttered, a place for reading, relaxing and conversation. We selected chaise lounges in a soft, textured fabric from Bernhardt Interiors, a funky modern chair from West Elm and a soft shaggy custom area rug!

Phalenrendering

A major addition for this Marietta, Georgia family of 5, this room is kid and pet friendly.  The use of slipcovers, Sunbrella fabrics and a custom FLOR  rug make it indestructible!!  We were excited to incorporate one of our favorite pieces of art from Sugarboo Designs.

If you keep up with us, you may remember the space we designed for the boy’s cottage at The United Methodist Children’s Home last fall.  This was such a rewarding charity project and we’ve heard that the boys are loving their new hangout space!!   You can read about it HERE!

UMCHrendering

Each of these drawings emphasizes the end result of the collaboration between designers, manufacturers, installers and artists who help bring our visions to life!!

Sitting Room Inspiration

November 24, 2011

Written By: joann

We are working with a new client who is a busy, stay at home mom of three girls under the age of 8 years old.  Her entire house feels like it belongs to her kids so she has hired us to make her living room a “sitting room” just for her.  To relax, read and get away from the household hustle, bustle.  Here’s some inspiration:

Country Living featured this happy “preppy” sitting room.  The collage above the wall is fabric inserted into embroidery hoops.  The lamps have grosgrain ribbon strung around them and the pillows add a fun pop of color.

I love the painted floor in this room and the coffee table that has stools stored in it for extra seating.

I adore the coastal, cottage feel of this room.  This would surely feel like a getaway.

Better Homes and Gardens

This room from House Beautiful is filled with re-purposed items and has a very eclectic feel to it.

Whatever your “style” – bright and happy, neutral and subdued, rustic or glamorous, it’s all about how a room makes you “feel”.  I can’t wait to design this sitting room for this client and make it her “quiet, get away from it all” place.
